8 Fitness Mistakes You Don't Know You're Making

I love Christmas time. Putting up the tree, decorations, lights, food. I put my Christmas tree up in November, write lists, make plans for food and presents. I listen carefully and take notes all  Read 
You work out every day, but nothing's happening. Despite years of effort, those lean-toned arms you want still haven't surfaced. Perhaps all you need is a few simple tweaks to your workout regimen. Here are eight common fitness mistakesyou might not even know you're making. 
1. Reading while working out. 
It's tempting. I get it. Gym time equals down time and all you want to do is dive into 50 Shades of Grey while droning along on your stationary bike. 
Here's the problem. You're not putting in the work to affect change. Your focus is elsewhere. You'll naturally pick a slower pace while biking allowing you to read better, not pedal better. Put the book down and get your heart rate up. 
2. Wearing the wrong shoe.
Running shoes are designed to have more cushion. The sole is built up. Since running involves straight-planar motion, not much stability is built into the shoe. Cross-trainers have a lower profile and more stability built into the shoe. This helps protect the ankle from rolling over during side-to-side jumping. 
If you wear a running shoe while cross training, you risk spraining your ankle. Always wear the right shoe for the activity. 
3. Futile abdominal exercises.
You think you have to do exercises specifically targeting your abs to create a six-pack, but that's actually not the case. Consistency with balanced workouts alongside clean eating are all you really need.
Abdominal muscles are activated when doing functional exercises since they help stabilize your body. Higher level training, including resistance and plyometric training naturally build abdominal strength. If you have a layer of fat over your abdominal muscles, they won't show regardless of how many crunches you do. Since you can't spot reduce, abdominal exercises won't help unless you first shed that layer of fat. 
That's not to say you don't need a strong core. You do! But you're better off doing exercises like Pilates and yoga that work on lumbar stabilization. This will improve overall stability and enhance muscular performance. 
4. Performing only one form of exercise.
For part of my career, I worked as a physical therapist inside a gym. During that time, I saw the same people doing the same exercises day after day. Guess what? They looked the same after five years! 
I've worked with runners who couldn't lift one quarter their body weight. I've worked with bodybuilders who couldn't run one quarter of a mile without getting winded. Your body needs variety. If your heart and muscles aren't challenged, they won't get stronger. You've got to mix it up!
5. Not lifting the right weight.
I often see men and women performing 30+ reps while strength training. Essentially, they're turning what should be an anaerobic exercise into an aerobic exercise. Lifting weights activates fast twitch fibers which increases muscle mass and strength. If you don't lift heavy enough weights, you won't recruit these fast twitch fibers. 
In order to get "toned," you have to increase muscle mass and strength. Therefore, you have to heavy up the weights. 
6. Not pushing yourself hard enough.
The body backs off when it gets uncomfortable. It's a primitive reaction. Some folks may put in the time but not the effort needed to get the results they're hoping for. 
Out of the hundreds of physical therapy patients and personal training clients I've worked with over the past fourteen years, I've only asked two to slow down. It's time to push harder! 
7. Not performing contract-relax stretching.
Why are gymnasts, dancers and yogis so flexible? Because they activate their muscles throughout a lengthened range
Typical static stretching stretches the muscle without activating it, so the muscle never "remembers" being stretched. This is why your flexibility doesn't improve when doing the same static stretches day after day. To contract-relax stretch, gently stretch your muscle for 20 seconds, lightly back off the stretch, contract the muscle for five seconds and then stretch a little further. Repeat. 
8. Not incorporating balance training.
"What?" This is the typical answer I get when I ask a client if they're doing any balance training. 
Balance training improves proprioception, the sense of where your joint is in space. The stronger your balance and proprioception, the stronger your functional strength. 
Instead of doing a basic standing bicep curl, stand on one leg to do it. Or stand on a BOSU ball and do it. Or stand one-legged on a BOSU ball and do it ... you get the picture. 
By recognizing and addressing the fitness mistakes you might not even know you're making, you'll greatly improve your workouts, ability to lose weight and general wellness.

NO SCHOOLS close to home for your children, jeopardizing their safety!

THINK PEOPLE!
Be INDEPENDENT in your thinking!
Be INDEPENDENT in your choices!
Chose a Mayor who is not IN BED with any political parties, (Democrat or Republican)
who is for ALL PEOPLE of Chicago!

Stop complaining about Jobs, School closings, etc. and GET BEHIND a man who has been committed to the Community AT LARGE (People of  all walks of life!)

He owes no POLITICAL FAVORS and can help you help yourself!
Help his team, help us!

A comprehensive list of referendum and initiative votes on the use of photo enforcement nationwide.

A total of 1,052,109 voters across eleven states have gone to the polls to cast a ballot in favor or against the use of photo enforcement. The vast majority have said "no" to red light cameras and speed cameras.

Since 1991, there have been a total of 35 election contests in Arizona, California, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Texas, Washington. With few exceptions, automated ticketing has failed by as much as 86 percent. One city did embrace the use of cameras after uniformed police officers were dispatched to go door-to-door to "encourage" citizens to keep the ticketing system in place.

KOB is hosting its 7th Annual "Feed A Teen Dinner", Saturday, November 22, 2014 (1:00-5:00pm) to promote higher education and non-violence among our youth... During this historical event the attending youth will enjoy a day of family, a holiday meal, entertainment, music, and special prizes. 

We need your help!

Our goal is to feed 1,000 teens for Thanksgiving, to give children/youth a sense of family and community and something to be thankful for. This event was started in response to the many children that came to my house on Thanksgiving Day to ask if they could share our traditional family setting and dinner because they had no one to share it with at home. So far, over 3,000 children, teens and young adults have attended this event!

Funds raised by this event will enable Kids Off The Block to feed youth and their families city wide, continue to promote non-violence and advocate for higher education among our youth in Chicago IL. All donations are tax deductible (a tax exempt letter will be sent upon request).

Herb Kent 25 years!

Herb Kent's 25 Years on V103
Chicago radio legend Herb Kent turned 85 this year and also celebrated 25 years at V103 FM. In case most of you missed it, WVAZ-FM hosted its own 25th Anniversary Concert at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont last month, which featured Chaka Khan, Charlie Wilson, Bell Biv DeVoe, and Robin Thicke. V103 morning show host and syndicated radio/TV star Steve Harvey presented as well.
Herb is known by a few nicknames, including The Cool Gent, The King of the Dusties, and The Honorary Mayor of Bronzeville. Most of all he is known for being one of the longest lasting and most important figures in Chicago radio history. Over his career of nearly seven decades, he has worked at such Chicago area stations as WVON-AM, WJJD-AM, WBEZ-FM, WMAQ-AM, WGES-AM, WBEE-AM, WHFC-AM, WJOB-AM, WGRY-AM, and of course, WVAZ-FM.
He has been honored by having a street named in his honor, Herb Kent Drive in the Bronzeville neighborhood. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1995. He holds a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the longest serving radio DJ with his 69 year career, which is still going strong. Even at 85 years old, Kent can still be heard each weekend on V103. He also serves as a lecturer of communications at Chicago State University.
In October 1988, the then-owner of the station at 102.7 FM, Broadcast Partners, changed the music on the station to an urban adult contemporary format and had the call letters changed from WBMX-FM to WVAZ-FM -- branded as "V103." Over the course of the last 25 years, the station has continued to grow in popularity, despite going through various owners during those years. It has steadily transitioned from a quiet, niche station to Chicago's highest-rated radio powerhouse. WVAZ-FM has held the #1 spot in the monthly ratings since the spring of 2012.

The "Green Thing"

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment. The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, "We didn't have this ‘green thing’ back in my earlier days." The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations."


 
The older lady said that she was right -- our  generation didn't have the "green thing" in its day. The older lady went on to explain:
 
Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day.
 
Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books. This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribbling. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags.  But, too bad we didn't do the "green thing" back then.
 
We walked up stairs because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building.  We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the "green thing" in our day.
 
Back then we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220volts. Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.
 
But that young lady is right; we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Back then we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.
 
But she's right; we didn't have the "green thing" back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blade in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the "green thing" back then.
 
Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service in the family's  $45,000 SUV or van, which cost what a whole house did before the “green thing." We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.
 
But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the "green thing" back then?
Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smart ass young person.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn’t take much to piss us off... especially from a tattooed, multiple pierced smartass, who can't make change without the cash register telling them how much.
