Chicago Legend Rev. Dr. Johnnie Coleman Leaves a Legacy
Isn't it funny how you plan for certain things in life to happen, and then life steps in and shows you another way. I will always remember every Sunday morning I would sit at home in front of the TV watching The Rev. Dr. Johnnie Coleman, Founder and Minister Emeritus of Christ Universal Temple, who made her transition last Monday. I was just too tired to go to church because at the time I was working overnights in radio, then rotating days.
Never in a million years did I think I would attend and become a member of her huge organization. I always thought to myself, "There are waaaaaaaaay tooo many people in that church for me. Little did I know, I would become one of those people.
I met a sisterfriend, (Linda Shepard who also made her transition 2006) who had just moved here from California. I met Linda at a networking event with Women Employed. She asked me to volunteer at the Abraham Lincoln Center mentoring young girls. Linda was so persuasive, I couldn't help but to join her and about a dozen other ladies at the center every other week.
Linda asked me what church I attended, and I told her I didn't go to church because of my schedule. Every since I started my career in radio, I have always worked weekends, especially on Sundays. At the time, I was working around the clock at WJPC, (Dusties & Gospel) which turned into WEJM (Same format) and it just wasn't possible. Besides, I really didn't want to be stuck in the parking lot with all those cars! No parking, no pantyhose, no people! I was too comfortable!
Comfort will keep you in a place you don't need to be, and keep you there longer than necessary! It was necessary for me to make a change, and it came in the form of a sister from another city.
Linda suggested I switch days with someone and try to make it to at least one Sunday service. I did and the rest is history. I too became what Christ Universal Temple members refer to as "Johnnie's Baby."
Little by little, I was really beginning to enjoy the services despite the huge crowd. I was very satisfied catching the service at home, in my PJ's, but there's nothing like the energy of people in a room on one accord with their higher power, we choose to call God!
Linda convinced me that the best seat in the house was not downstairs on the front row, but in the balcony. The acoustics were wonderful and it appeared that whomever was speaking at the podium, you could almost reach out and touch them.
Another thing was you could always be one of the first to get an audio cassette (Yes, I did say cassette, CD's weren't out yet!) copy of the Sunday message. I loved that because at the time (before Corporate came in and stole all the joy of radio!) I could play excerpts from her message on my radio show, The Gospel Connection!
It was truly inspiring and uplifting. It made my job so much more fun! People would always call and ask me what time I was going to play it so they could record it. Word got back to Johnnie and she loved it. I became very upset when mangement wanted to discontinue it. After all, they told me I could play anyting inspirational, so I did. They won.
I mentioned my dilema to Johnnie
and she reassured me that it was ok. She went on to say that "There is a time and a place for everything. The time for that experience had run its course, and now it was time to move on." Of course I didn't want to hear that, but I had no choice but to move on.
Move on is what I did. One of the Program Director's (Mike Watkins) at WGCI just happen to be listening to my radio show that Sunday as I played my last excerpt from her Sunday sermon. He liked it so much that he invited me down to WGCI studios for an interview. I interviewed, but didn't get the job. Back to Lansing again at the WEJM!
Well wouldn't you know, a year or two later, I get another call from WGCI! This time it's Chicago's Favorite Sunday morning Gospel Announcer, Ms. Jacquie Hasselrig! She called me in for an interview and the rest is history! Thank you Ms. Jacquie for seeing something in me that Mr. Watkins did not! Praise God!
Here I am 20 + years later, no longer in radio, but TV Producer/Host and still writing. (Writing is my first love!) Radio/TV is simply the vehicle to express it! I have Dr. Johnnie Coleman to thank for that experience. She opened my eyes to things I could not see.
It reminds me of our conversation where she encouraged me to ask for help in seeing things that we cannot see with the human eye. Meditation has become my saviour! I commune daily with my inner spirit on a deeper level, because I listenend to her words of encouragement, as well as taken many a class at Christ Universal Temple.
I am most delighted to have been in touch with the spirit of Dr. Johnnie Coleman, and the Truth Lessons she shared with the world. She had definitely taught me how to live a better life. I only hope that my words reach a third of the people that she has helped in life.
When she wrote the book "Heal Yourself" I was so excited to see that a woman of her stature had beat the odds of what the medical profession can only recognize as a miracle. A course in Miracles is the class that I began taking at her church that helped save my sanity many a day when I was on the brink of insanity!
I remember the saying "If you want something different, then you've got to do something drastic!" That's what Dr. Coleman did. That's how she lived her life and thought nothing of anyone who thought anything less than what we know as Truth Principles.
It was because of Dr. Coleman that I had the experience of interviewing many of the celebrities that came to visit at C.U.T! (Christ Universal Temple) Most of them I probably would not have been in their circle to gain an interview. Many of them were C.U.T. babies as well, including but not limited to Les Brown & Gladys Knight, Della Reese, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Lee Williams and the QC's, Iyanla Vanzant., and so many more I can't even remember them all.
What I do remember is this. Think. Move. Be Still.
Thank You Rev. Dr. Johnnie Coleman for leaving a legacy for us all to follow. I feel your spirit with me every single day. Rest in peace. The journey continues.
Lovingly, Zelda Robinson-Hogues A Johnnie Coleman Baby for Life!
