The King of Radio, The Mayor of Bronzeville, The man who fed us the Dusty Diner, Herb Kent The Kool Gent, has made his transition into Radio Heaven after 70 years in radio, 27 of those years in Chicago!
Herbie Baby, 88 years young, passed away Saturday, October 22nd after giving his final broadcast.
Years of watching and working with Herb, was truly a dream come true for me. I listened to Herb as a kid, then to get a chance to work in the same industry! Same radio station! On the same floor! Right down the hall?
Ony God could make that dream reality!
After getting off the air at Gospel Radio 1390AM,
(Now Inspiration 1390) I would walk down the hall, into the studio with Herb
(with my little handycam) ready to film.
Traci, his veteran Producer and Ken Smith/ABC 7 Camera man or Cadillac Sam, would be there.
I knew he would be telling a corny joke or great story about some group that he had helped put on the map!
We all knew that Battle of The Best
would be good, no matter who was competing!
Herb was always gracious, allowing me to film him and his guests.
Some of my favorites were my cuzn' Smokey Robinson, Gerald and Eddie LeVert and Chaka Kahn!
He has influenced the lives of Millions! Few of today's Radio Personalities will have longevity in radio as Herbert Rogers Kent!
Since Corporate America has taken over, long gone are the days where the DJ has the power to make or break a new artist.
The PROGRAMMING Dept. handles that!
Herb programmed his show with love for years. He took his time to choose the song he knew you wanted to hear.
NO JOCK has that power anymore! (Not major market anyway, unless...)
We may no longer hear his voice, but you can still see clips of him on hln-tv show where I had the honor and privledge! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
