Bronzeville Migratory Bird Tour

Bronzeville Migratory Bird Tour

The Great Migration of African American workers from the South to the Bronzeville community
adjacent to IIT Main Campus took place 100 years ago, thus writing a whole new chapter
in our collective history. But did you know that many species of birds from the South also
follow that same migratory path?

Discover and experience this astonishing parallel by joining
The Bronzeville Historical Society for its free
"Bronzeville Earth Day/Migratory Bird Tour"

from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, April 4, 2015.
The tour starts at the Stephen A. Douglas Tomb
and Memorial, 636 East 35th Street in Chicago.

RSVP is appreciated but not required via an email to:

conversations many of us have....

In my 20s, I was fat, exhausted and desperate to lose weight. Even though I was 40 pounds overweight, I was much more concerned with fitting into the clothes in my closet than I was about my health.
I had gone from being an extremely fit teenager to being a somewhat fit college student to a 40-pound overweight working woman. I still remember turning down company get-togethers and blind dates because I was so uncomfortable with the way I looked. Desperate to lose weight, I tried just about every diet available.

Unfortunately, none of the diets satisfied my craving for good food. On each weight loss attempt, I'd lose a few pounds only to give up and gain all the weight back and then some.
It wasn't until I realized that fad diets weren't a viable solution for me that I started to work on a solution. After years of failed attempts to lose weight, I finally found a way to drop all 40 pounds and keep it off for good — in fact, I've been at or near my goal weight for nearly 20 years! The solution wasn't about depriving myself of treats or starving myself. The solution was simple: clean eating.

I started by eliminating excess sugar, processed foods and artificial sweeteners. I also quit eating anything with chemicals or preservatives.
When I finally found a way of eating that had me dropping the pounds quickly and allowed me to eat good food (like fish tacos with mango-avocado salsa, kale and maple-roasted sweet potato salad, 3-bean chili and even gluten-free, dairy-free triple chocolate brownies), I knew I'd found my weight loss silver bullet.

I know what it feels like to be overweight and unhappy but I also know what if feels like to finally fit into a smaller size pair of pants and smile when you step on the scale. I wish everyone who is struggling with their weight and feeling hopeless, like I felt, could know what it feels like to finally lose all the excess weight.
I know what it's like to lie in bed and cry, thinking you'll never lose weight. I know what it's like to turn down invitations because you have no clothes that fit. But I also know how great it feels when the weight starts melting off.
If you've just about given up on ever reaching your goal weight, if your tired of depriving yourself of good food and if you're tired of seeing the number on the scale creep up rather than down, clean eating may be just what you need to jump start your weight loss and once and for all reach your goal weight.
Now that I'm in my late 40's, I believe the most important benefit of being a healthy weight and eating a clean diet is countering disease and keeping your body working well and healthy. But I can't lie: I also love the feeling of fitting into my skinny jeans!

Whether you pick up a copy of the, The Healthy You Diet, (and/or join me for the free Healthy You Challenge) or embark on another clean eating program, I hope you'll give clean eating a try.
You have nothing to lose but your excess weight!

WOMEN'S History Month!

As we continue Women's History Month, let us be reminded of those who came before us to make our way a little better. Early on in my radio career,  (early 90's) I was asked to volunteer as a judge for the Operation Push Youth Oratorical Society.

During that time  I had the pleasure of meeting a young lady who was passionate about these young people gaining the speaking skills necessary to move forward in life.  My career before radio was that of a Trainer/Motivational Speaker, it was my mission to assist our youth in the process.

Little did I know I would be so inspired by our children, and even more inspired by a Mother of Operation Push.  This Mother, was non other than
Rev. Willie Barrow, also know as the Little Warrior!

With her feisty spirit, she showed us what it takes to connect with youth in one afternoon, more than I've ever learned from any text book in a full semester! A Mother of all Mothers! We miss you already!

Chicago's own Little Warrior has made her transition.  Gone physically, but her spirit lives on forever!

THE “LITTLE WARRIOR” HAS MADE HER TRANSITION
Statement By Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

Rev. Willie Taplin Barrow, “The Little Warrior” from Burton, Texas, made her transition last night.  She is my sister beloved who was my co-worker for more than 50 years.  She was a woman of unusual courage, character and ability.  She was on Dr. King’s staff during the days of Operation Breadbasket, continued on my staff at Operation PUSH, was deeply involved in my two presidential campaigns as a delegate and as part of the Electoral College vote from Illinois, supported the National Rainbow Coalition, was active in the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and attended every Saturday morning community meeting that her health would permit.   She was a great motivational speaker with the unusual gift of being able to take a scared group of people and inspire them to take militant non-violent action to correct a wrong.

She was an authentic freedom fighter in the linage of Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks and Fannie Lou Hamer.  In sickness and death her body was frail, but her spirit and good works were never feeble.  Our memories of her will never die.  Her flame of hope, freedom and justice will forever burn.

Rev. Willie Barrow was a world citizen, traveling to North Vietnam, Russia, Nicaragua, Cuba and South Africa.  She was in South Africa when Nelson Mandela was released from prison.  She was a short woman in stature and humble woman in spirit, but her life and living made a global impact.  Rev. Barrow, we will miss you, but God has gained a strong spiritual little warrior.

partied-a-little-too-hard-how-to-detox-after-a-wild-weekend.\

1. Choose to indulge and enjoy it.
If you're going to go nuts, you might as well have fun!
2. Be nice to yourself before, during, and after.
There's no point in harping on the situation or criticizing yourself. It's especially important not to dwell on the situation after it's done — you make the stress worse and make it harder to digest the experience.
3. If you don't like how you feel, use this as information to get back on track.
Now that you've acknowledged this experience and have forgiven yourself, notice how you're feeling and take a mental note that you don't feel so hot. Use this to motivate you to make healthier choices now.
4. Flood your body with water.
Even better if it's warm water with lemon. This will help flush out the unhealthy choices and assist with digesting (and eliminating) your food.
5. Cut out all sugar, processed and packaged foods, dairy, and flour.
Stick with a whole foods eating plan. Think: leafy greens, veggies, fruit, lean protein (eggs, fish, chicken, etc.), fermented veggies, nuts and seeds. (For a quick and easy boost, try my sweet potato kale crunch.)
6. Take a probiotic.
It's important to boost the good bacteria in your gut to help fight off the junk that's now in your body. A probiotic is a great way to start.
7. Drink dandelion root tea.
This decaffeinated tea is thought to help support your liver, which is really important to help your body eliminate toxins and function at an optimal level.
8. Breathe.
This will help repair your cells and boost your energy. Try the following breathing exercise: Inhale through your nose for a count of 4, hold the inhale for a count of 1, exhale through your nose for a count of 4, hold the exhale for a count of 1. Repeat 3 to 5 times.

5 Cleansing Smoothies For A Lighter Breakfast

Instead of making the usual eggs with spinach or a Greek yogurt, try one of these smoothies listed below. Each is packed with nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Plus they're loaded with healthy fats for stable moods. Smoothies make a healthy and easy breakfast option when you're a busy person on the go. To save time, you can make your smoothie the night before.
Feel free to add a scoop of plant-based protein such as Vega, hemp protein or Sun Warrior for a boost of protein. If you want to supercharge your smoothie, add spirulina, maca, chorella, or bee pollen. To spice things up, add a 1-inch piece of ginger or a dash of cayenne or cinnamon.
